SummaryAdaptogenic drinks add plant extracts such as ashwagandha, often with L-theanine, to a soft drink or alcohol-free beer, as a way to unwind without alcohol. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says some ashwagandha preparations may help with stress and insomnia, that evidence on anxiety is unclear, and that it should be avoided in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Who should avoid them

NCCIH says ashwagandha should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, is not recommended before surgery or for people with autoimmune or thyroid disorders, and may interact with medicines for diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid and seizures, and with sedatives and immunosuppressants. Rare cases of liver injury have been linked to ashwagandha supplements. If you take medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
