What the NHS says
It's a good idea to avoid drinking alcohol when taking medicine or feeling unwell. But it's unlikely that drinking alcohol in moderation will cause problems if you're taking the most common antibiotics.
| Medicine | NHS advice |
|---|---|
| Most common antibiotics | Moderate drinking unlikely to cause problems |
| Metronidazole | No alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after |
| Tinidazole | No alcohol during treatment and for 72 hours after |
| Linezolid | Can be affected by fermented drinks such as beer and lager |
The NHS does not say whether 0.5% beer is acceptable with metronidazole. Because the advice is to avoid alcohol completely, a 0.0% drink or water is the safe choice. The linezolid warning is about fermented drinks, so it may apply to alcohol-free beer too; check with your pharmacist.
Where IMPOSSIBREW fits
IMPOSSIBREW, which publishes this site, adds ashwagandha, L-theanine and magnesium to its beers. Its own label says they are not recommended if you take any medication, including antidepressants, MAO inhibitors, blood thinners or SSRIs, or have heart disease, hypertension or a GI disorder. Finish the course first.
This page summarises published guidance and research. It is not medical advice.
