What alcohol does to sleep
The alcohol in your system will mean you spend less time in the important Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage of sleep, with the end result that you wake up feeling less refreshed. Even just a couple of drinks will have an effect.
A 2025 analysis of 27 studies (Gardiner and colleagues, Sleep Medicine Reviews) found REM disruption from about two standard drinks, getting worse with dose. Alcohol Change UK says sleep can be worse for the first few days after stopping, then deeper.
The hops studies
| Study | Who | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Franco 2012, PLOS One | 17 nurses on shifts, 333ml of 0.0% beer with supper for 14 days | Time to fall asleep fell from 20.5 to 12.0 minutes |
| Franco 2014, Acta Physiologica Hungarica | 30 stressed students, one beer at dinner for 14 days | Better self-reported sleep quality |
The authors suggest hop resins raise GABA, a calming brain chemical. Both studies are small, with no placebo drink, so treat them as a promising signal rather than proof.
Where IMPOSSIBREW fits
IMPOSSIBREW, which publishes this site, makes 0.5% beers for winding down in the evening, brewed with Social Blend (L-theanine, ashwagandha, magnesium). It makes no sleep claim for them. At 0.22 units a can, swapping a few pints for it removes almost all the alcohol that the research links to broken sleep.
This page summarises published guidance and research. It is not medical advice.
FAQs
Does alcohol-free beer help you sleep?
It avoids the REM disruption alcohol causes. Two small Spanish studies found 0.0% hopped beer with dinner helped people fall asleep faster, but they had no placebo drink.
Is it OK to drink alcohol-free beer before bed?
For most adults, yes. Mind the extra fluid late at night, and check the label for sugar.
Why do I sleep badly after drinking?
Alcohol cuts REM sleep and makes the second half of the night lighter and more broken as blood alcohol falls.
